Chemical Peels

Superficial chemical peels are used for revitalizing and rejuvenating the skin to give skin a healthy radiant glow. A chemical solution is applied to the skin which removes dead skin cells and stimulates a burst of new cell growth. Superficial peels, sometimes referred to as "lunch-time peels" have minimal downtime and patients can return back to work and normal activities immediately following the procedure. Mild redness followed by a few days of peeling can be easily camouflaged by makeup. A series of superficial peels can be very effective in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, balancing skin tone/pigmentation, improving appearance of large pores, minimizing acne, and improving texture of sun-damaged skin.

Prior to receiving a chemical peel it is important to know a few things:

  1. If you use any topical retinoid products (such as Retin-A®, Differin®, Tazorac®), azelaic acid, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or other exfoliating skin care products, you should stop these products 3-days before and after each peel. If you have been on Accutane® you must wait at least 6 months after finishing this medication prior to having a peel.
  2. Wearing sunscreen daily of at least SPF 30 and avoiding excessive sun exposure is a must. Your new skin will be sensitive to the sun so it will be important to protect it.
  3. For patients who have a history of developing cold sores, any procedure done around the mouth area has the potential to trigger an outbreak. Please notify us if you have a history of developing cold sores, an antiviral medication may be prescribed for you to help prevent an outbreak.

Here at Dermatology Physicians of Dallas we offer several different superficial chemical peels:

Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) Chemical Peel - A salicylic acid peel that works well for acne because it is oil soluble and can penetrate deep into the skin follicles and pores, which contain sebum. It helps open up clogged pores and exfoliate the top layer of dead skin cells. This peel works well for oily skin types.

AFA Facial Peel - An acidified amino acid peel that combines the visible anti-aging benefits of improved exfoliation and moisture retention with remarkably low levels of irritation. AFA peels help increase skin elasticity, remove damaging free radicals and improve signs of photo-aging. This peel is recommended for dry and sensitive skin types.

AFA Facial Clay Peel - A unique 2-step skin rejuvenating peel using a clay mask to condition the skin by removing oil and impurities, followed by a chemical peel for immediate visible improvement in acne breakouts, tone, texture and sun damage. Recommended for normal to oily skin types. Superficial chemical peels can be alternated with microdermabrasion or combined with other laser or cosmetic procedures to achieve optimal skin rejuvenation.

VI PeelTM - VI Peel combines phenol acids, Vitamin C and Retin-A, which together are said to make for a gentler procedure that's safe for all skin types. After a three-minute application, the peel works gradually over five to seven days, clearing up acne and acne scarring, brightening skin and increasing collagen production.
